First Time Drivers

Depending on your age, there are different programs for you to follow to obtain your New Jersey license. All three involve some form of a NJ learner’s permit.

Age 16 And Up

The three phases required for those 16 and up are:

  • Get a student learner’s permit, which requires passing your written test (hint – use the $CSLINK to do it in 10 minutes).
  • Provisional license (one year supervised driving)
  • Basic driver’s license (once you are 18)

17 And Older

21 or Older

If you are 21 or older, you can get your license by passing three phases:

  • Pass your written test (p.s. use the $CSLINK), vision test, pay the fee and bring the docs you need.
  • Practice driving for three months
  • Get a provisional license to drive supervised
  • Practice driving for a year and then you get your license
