Getting a Texas Learners Permit

Who needs a learners permit?

New drivers wishing to operate a motor vehicle for the first time are required to obtain a learners license or permit, as well as those wishing to change to a different class license and add endorsements.

How old must I be to get a Learners Permit?

You must be at least 15 years of age to begin the learners permit process in general. Other types of licenses and endorsements may have specific ages older than this to apply.

Requirements for getting a learners permit

In order to receive a learner’s permit in the state, applicants are required to apply in person at the DPS office and must submit documentations required in order to begin the process. This includes:

• Documents that provide the DMV with proof of identity including full name, date and place of birth and confirms US citizenship.
• Proof of a valid social security number with a social security card or approved alternative. If a social security number has not been issued, evidence of lawful presence in the US must be provided.
• Documents providing the DMV with a permanent mailing address that will show evidence of state residency. This will also be used to confirm your county.
• Minors must also submit proof of current enrollment in High School, a High School Diploma or GED.
• Minors must also submit one type of driver’s education proof. This will be a certificate of completion for an approved driver’s education course or a certificate of completion from an approved public school driver’s education course. If the driver receives parent-taught driver’s education, a driver’s log affidavit signed and completed along with a certification of classroom hour’s driver’s education must be presented.

Driving with a TX learners permit

A learning period of six months while new drivers hold a permit is required for all minors entering into the driver’s license process. During this time, new drivers must not operate a motor vehicle on roadways between the hours of midnight and 5 am for safety reasons at any time. A licensed driver over the age of 21 must accompany the learner in the vehicle at all times.

Steps to getting a TX learners permit

Driver’s education must be completed before the driver can apply for a learner’s license or permit if under age 25. Gather documentation and visit a DPS in person to begin the process. Minors under age 18 need to bring a parent or guardian to the process.

• Submit a completed application to the DMV. Parents must sign the application under oath for drivers under the age of 18.
• Provide documentation required including proof of identity which gives the DPS your full name, date and place of birth and citizenship status. A social security card or alternative must also be provided.
• Submit proof of residency, county and a permanent address.
• Proof of completion of an approved drivers education course.
• Pay the required fees and if required take the written test with a 70% score or above.
• Take a vision test.
• Submit a thumbprint and take a photograph to complete the process.
